đź‘‘ ROYAL ARTISTS Series:
One of the great privileges of presenting The Art Review is the opportunity to speak with some of today's leading portrait artists about the stories behind their work.
At the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition, I met acclaimed artist Miriam Escofet to discuss her experience of painting Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Creating a royal portrait is far more than achieving a likeness. It requires sensitivity, trust and the ability to capture the character and presence of one of the most recognised figures in the world.
A particularly fascinating aspect of Miriam's portrait is that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II officially unveiled it electronically during the Covid lockdown – believed to be the first time a royal portrait had been unveiled in this way.
In this interview, Miriam reflects on that remarkable experience and the responsibility that comes with portraying a monarch.
QUESTION: What do you think makes a truly memorable royal portrait?
