There are exhibitions you visit and there are exhibitions that make you stop, look again

and want to discover the extraordinary stories behind the works.'This Is Still Not a Pipe:

The Afterlife of Magritte' is now open at Gagosian, Grosvenor Hill, is for me, one of the great London exhibitions of 2026.

I attended today's Press View and had the pleasure of interviewing Jasper Sharp, one of the curators, for The Art Review, surrounded by an exhibition that is beautifully conceived, superbly installed and dramatically lit.

At its heart, of course, is René Magritte with apples, pipes, bowler hats, clouds and those wonderfully unsettling shifts between reality and illusion that remain instantly recognisable.

But what makes this exhibition particularly fascinating is what comes after Magritte.

Important works spanning Magritte’s career, loaned from museums and private collections, are brought into dialogue with artists of different generations, exploring the remarkable afterlife of his ideas and just how profound his influence remains.

There are so many stories behind these masterpieces.

The exhibition also has a wonderful historical resonance, marking 90 years since London’s International Surrealist Exhibition of 1936, staged at the New Burlington Galleries only a short distance from Gagosian today.

Jasper and I discussed some of these remarkable stories, Magritte’s enduring influence and the fascinating connections running throughout the exhibition.

More from our interview on The Art Review shortly.

For me, this is an exhibition not to miss.
