I just had the pleasure of interviewing renowned art dealer and TV presenter, PHILIP MOULD for The Art Review' at his new exhibition at Philip Mould & Company, London, which fuses botanical art and living horticulture – now on until the 18th June.
‘Garden to Canvas: Cedric Morris and Benton End’ showcases Morris’ outstanding exuberant flower paintings, many of which have directly guided the restoration of his historic garden at Benton End, Suffolk. Guest-curated by James Horner, Head Gardener at Benton End, the exhibition is as much about renewal as it is about beauty: flowers that Morris painted and bred decades ago have been lovingly reintroduced.
Benton End was no ordinary home, it was a radical bohemian art school where painting, horticulture, and life thrived together. Morris and his partner Arthur Lett-Haines founded the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing here, nurturing talents such as Lucian Freud.
Today, that legacy is blooming once again. Timed with the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the exhibition reminds us of Morris’ forward-thinking approach to biodiversity, sustainability, and naturalistic planting - principles that feel more relevant than ever.
Do see this exceptional exhibition if you can - it’s a true dialogue between brush and bloom!
Best wishes
James
