Few paintings in art history have caused as much shock, admiration and debate as Caravaggio’s 'Victorious Cupid' now on display at The Wallace Collection in London.
On loan from the Gemäldegalerie Berlin, this audacious masterpiece plunges visitors into the charged artistic world of 17th-century Rome. Caravaggio’s Cupid was seen as daring, provocative, and was impossible to ignore.
Now reunited with two ancient Roman sculptures that once stood beside it in the legendary collection of Marchese Vincenzo Giustiniani (1564–1637), it was hung alongside works by Raphael and Titian.
Caravaggio pushed boundaries in his time just as today’s most fearless artists challenge ours - proving that true mastery is always ahead of its moment. I am featuring the exhibition which is free to the public, in The Art Review.
