Two artist brothers from Bologna, Annibale & Agostino Carracci, arrived in Rome in 1594 for a major commission: decorating the grand Farnese Palace, home of the young Cardinal Odoardo Farnese.
By 1597, they began preparing for the palace’s vast gallery. Their tools? Two enormous charcoal drawings—known as cartoons (from the Italian cartone, meaning large paper).
Full of gods, goddesses, sea creatures, and drama, these works reveal the brothers’ inspiration from Rome’s antique sculptures and the legacy of Michelangelo and Raphael.
Now on view at The National Gallery, London (until 6 July 2025), these rare drawings are a breathtaking look at Baroque genius in the making.
