One of the highlights of my visit to the Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Portrait Award 2026Â at the National Portrait Gallery was meeting and interviewing Joel Nichols, winner of this year's Young Artist Award.
At just 26 years old, Joel has already established himself as one of the most exciting emerging voices in contemporary portraiture. Originally from Winnipeg, Canada, his artistic journey has now brought him to one of the world's most prestigious portrait competitions, where his talent has been recognised with this important award.
The Young Artist Award celebrates exceptional emerging talent, and Joel's success reflects both his technical skill and his ability to create portraits that are thoughtful, engaging and deeply human.
In this interview for The Art Review, Joel shares the inspiration behind his work, what winning the award means to him, and his hopes for the future.
Congratulations once again to Joel Nichols and all the outstanding artists, and to the National Portrait Gallery for continuing to champion the next generation of portrait artists.
The exhibition is now open to the public and not to be missed.
