'MONET & LONDON. Views of the Thames’ the acclaimed exhibition with Professor Mark Hallett, Märit Rausing Director of the The Courtauld Gallery Institute of Art and Danièle Ryman, at the VIP reception.
Tomorrow, I am filming the exhibition for The Art Review and News, London Live TV. Congratulations to the Courtauld team on this revelatory exhibition - with 21 paintings featured that have not been seen together for generations. In the winter of 1899, the French painter Claude Monet first set up his easel on the balcony of his suite at the Savoy, the view across the river now dominated by the Royal Festival Hall, the Hayward Gallery and the National Theatre was a crush of factories billowing filth, smoke and steam from giant chimneys, accompanied, you can only imagine, by a cacophony of humans, animals and machines - Monet loved the atmosphere and light.
