Royal Academy of Arts 'Behind the Scenes' at Richard Dadd: Beyond Bedlam Exhibition

One of the most anticipated exhibitions of the year has arrived at the Royal Academy of Arts.

In this Behind the Scenes edition of The Art Review, I spoke with Nicolas Tromans, exhibition curator and author, together with Sylvie Broussine, Associate Curator at the Royal Academy, to explore the remarkable life and extraordinary imagination of Richard Dadd (1817–1886).

This is the first major retrospective devoted to Richard Dadd in more than 50 years, bringing together around 100 paintings, watercolours and drawings. Organised chronologically, the exhibition follows Dadd's artistic journey from his early years as a student at the Royal Academy Schools, through his travels, and the final 42 years of his life as a patient at Bethlem and Broadmoor Hospitals, where some of his most celebrated works were created.

Our conversation explores why Richard Dadd remains one of the most fascinating, enigmatic and compelling figures in British art.
