⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Tavares Strachan's enthralling exhibition "There Is Light Somewhere" at the Hayward Gallery is a profound exploration of forgotten Black heroes and histories. This show, running until September 1, brings to life the stories of individuals overlooked by mainstream historical narratives.
I reviewed for presenting THE ART REVIEW London Live TV, Friday and Sunday 6:45 pm and London Weekend Programmes. This is one of the best exhibition I have seen for a long time.
Strachan (44) is known for uncovering and celebrating these hidden histories. One striking example is the effigy of Henrietta Lacks, whose cells were crucial for medical research but whose contributions were long ignored. The exhibition also includes a monumental project, "The Encyclopaedia of Invisibility," featuring 17,000 entries about marginalised figures, presented in an immersive, floor-to-ceiling installation.
The outdoor installation, a replica of Marcus Garvey’s SS Yarmouth on roof terrace of the Gallery, symbolises Garvey's dream of reconnecting African Americans with their ancestral homeland.
Strachan's exhibition is a call to action, urging viewers to reconsider and expand their understanding of history. It’s a powerful, imaginative, and deeply moving show that challenges and delights its audience. I give it 5 Stars!
Have a good weekend
Best regards
