What was it really like to paint HM Queen Elizabeth II? Few artists knew HM Queen Elizabeth II as a sitter better than the renowned portrait painter JUNE MEDOZA, OBE. Australian-born, June became one of Britain's most celebrated portrait artists, painting Her Majesty on numerous occasions throughout her distinguished career.
In this rare archive interview, which I recorded for The Art Review at the Royal Society Of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition at London's Mall Galleries / Federation of British Artists June shares her personal memories of painting HM Queen Elizabeth II and offers a fascinating insight into working with one of the world's most recognisable and respected figures.
Her distinguished career included portraits of members of the Royal Family, Prime Ministers, military leaders and many of Britain's most influential personalities. Her reflections provide a remarkable glimpse into the relationship between artist and monarch, and the enduring role portraiture continues to play in recording history.
This interview marks the beginning of a new series, đź‘‘ Royal Artists, drawing on my archive of conversations with artists, curators and historians who have helped shape the visual story of the British monarchy.
It is a privilege to share these remarkable conversations through The Art Review, helping to preserve the voices and insights of those who have contributed to Britain's rich artistic and royal heritage.
QUESTION: What surprised you most about June's reflections?
