Edvard Munch Portraits: The Art Review to Film at Blockbuster Exhibition, National Portrait Gallery, London.

Writer: James NichollsJames Nicholls

We are delighted to film and present The Art Review at the upcoming EDVARD MUNCH PORTRAITS blockbuster exhibition, National Portrait Gallery on the 12th March.

Curated by the internationally renowned Dr. Alison White, this landmark exhibition is the UK’s first dedicated to Munch’s extraordinary portraiture.

Widely regarded as one of the great portraitists of the 19th and 20th centuries, Edvard Munch captured family, friends, lovers, writers, artists, and patrons with bold colour, energetic brushstrokes, and an intense engagement with the sitter. His powerful self-portraits and commissioned works transcend mere likeness, offering profound reflections on the human condition.

Munch’s early family portraits, are mainly created during the 1880s and 90s. After leaving his family home to study art formally in the mid-1880s, Munch became part of the bohemian scene in Kristiania (as Oslo was then known) – a network of internationally-connected artists and writers, chief of whom was the anarchist Hans Jæger whose portrait dominates this section. Munch’s interaction with bohemian circles in Kristiania, Paris and Berlin was vital for his development as an artist, leading him towards a more expressive style he termed ‘soul art’. In Berlin, Munch encountered the Polish writer and dramatist Stanisław Przybyszewski whose 1894 monograph Das Werk des Edvard Munch was the first publication to promote Munch internationally and to suggest the idea of the ‘Naked Soul’ as being fundamental to his work.

Stay tuned as The Art Review delves into this must-see exhibition, exploring the emotional depth and artistic innovation of Munch’s portraiture.
